I've noticed quite a few of these but I'm still finding new things! |

It's been pointed out that not only is Ludo inspired by Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are that Sarah has in her book collection, there is also a Ludo plush toy on the book shelf directly behind Sarah's door. A fluffy Sir Didymus doll is near the wooden labyrinth game. Hoggle, the dwarf, is not only represented by Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but also the bookends which clearly look like him. Sarah has a Firey stuffed toy and the music box that turns into a real ballroom. And of course, there's Merlin and Ambrosious. Filly contributes another connection between Sarah's dog Merlin and Sir Didymus's dog, Ambrosius. Filly points out that in the Arthurian Legends recounted by Mary Stewart, Merlin the Magician was the son of Ambrosius. Thanks for that bit of trivia, Filly! And Sarah's teddy bear, Lancelot, is named from King Arthur's tales.
Sarah has a framed print of M.C. Escher's 1953 lithograph "Relativity" which becomes the staircase room (commonly refered to as "The Escher Room" by we Labyrinthians:) where Jareth sings "Within You." |
If you have the widescreen edition of Labyrinth or a really quick eye, you may have noticed that Jareth himself can be seen as a tall, gray and green statue with a cane raised overhead located on the right-hand side of Sarah's vanity table. I suppose you could also say Jareth is kind of like The Wizard of Oz; there are also plenty of other allusions to this book/movie, such as Humongous being like an evil Tin Man, but that's a whole essay in itself! There are also pictures of "Linda Williams" presumably Sarah's mother, given the striking resemblance. Also in the photos is David Bowie, but here I suggest he's Linda's boyfriend Jeremy, who is mentioned in the novel. You can make it out clearer in the enlarged version of the pic at right.
Subj: Something to ponder and perhaps discuss
From: Stephanie (GMOS) Massick ([email protected])
Anyone ever notice the poor editing done in the scene where Sarah and Hoggle almost fall into the Bog of Stench? It's after she kisses him and they fall through that chute. From one angle, you see Hoggle come flying out, Sarah right behind him. But then they cut to a different shot, and you see Sarah come out again.
May your peach cobblers always be golden-brown,
Stephanie

Lotsa choppy cuts all through the movie get to be a little disappointing when you've seen it as many times as most of us have... Not the sort of thing that really begins to bother you until "VIEWING NUMBER 9" but I have the suspicion that the people who put the movie together had never imagined we'd be watching it as much as we do.
Time for another peach,

And some of my thoughts on the topic:
I didn't notice this part, but what about when Sarah picks up the fairy after Hoggle sprays it. You get a glimpse of her "huge" hands reaching down to lift up the fairy, but it cuts away rather abruptly before the hands lift the fairy. Overall the editing is good, I think. Just try 35 odd viewings of not one, not two, but three different versions of Legend ! Oy, talk about bad editing! That homepage is also in the works from yours truly!
OK, I have way too much free time on my hands. Take a look at these pictures:

(OK, I know it's really just the edge of an elaborate model, but have some fun with me! ;) Really, my mind is going mushy with all this Labyrinth stuff. It was recently pointed out to me by Glenn from the mailing list that this picture is actually a painting. The full size version of it shows Hoggle standing at the bottom, so it's not likely to be a model, now, is it? Doh!
